ISA = I Simply Arrest

This week, Malaysian Media History (MMH) seems to be the main focus of my college life. As if only a fews days' worth of lessons before the mid-terms wasn't enough, we had to finish 9 questions on Operasi Lalang, the May 13th Incident and Constitution Articles. Not to mention 2 presentations in 1 day. *sigh*

But anyway, while trying to answer a question on ISA, I found this really funny phrase:

"ISA = I Simply Arrest"

OMG!! It is so true! XD That's why people are trying to convince the government to get rid of the ISA (proper name is Internal Security Act) in Malaysia. And not only the people here. Apparently, the USA and other countries are quite interested in this topic as well.

Gosh, what time is it now? Oh, 12.34 p.m.
I only have less than half an hour to complete the last 2 questions AND try to remember something, anything about the stuff that I've been answering. Hip hip hooray! - NOT

See ya laterz, alligatorz!

Heroes Mania

...not me.
Just Rhea, Ruth, Nicole, Aaron and a few others. I think.

I only like Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) from Heroes coz he's super cute and has the amazing ability to control time.

Just imagine: There's this pain-in-the-ass Malaysian Media History assignment which we have to finish by Thursday AND a pesky English research topic for presentation on that day as well. *poof* We go back in time to Friday so there's plenty of time to finish both! Nice eh? XD

Of course, what's a blog post without pictures? So here he is...

My favourite time-travelling geek from Heroes! ^^

It was a dark and stormy night...

So after being handed a 500-word essay assignment by our dear English lecturer Ms Azizah last week (or was it the week before?), I finally got around to doing it at around 12.15 a.m. on the day it was due, which is today. Like I said before, procrastination dies really hard.

The title of the essay was pretty straightforward - "The Pen is Mightier than the Sword". I know some of the more... *ahem* clumsy people out there might just make a typo and link the 2nd and 3rd words together. XD But whatever - we're not talking about stationery size here.

The guy who coined the phrase was Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton for his play Richelieu in 1839. Basically, it means that words or ideas have more influence than action or violence.

Sir Edward also thought up the phrase "It was a dark and stormy night..." which is the archetypal example of a florid, melodramatic style of fiction writing. I just found out that Snoopy is very fond of using it for his novel, which he [tries to] type while sitting on the roof of his kennel.

Peanuts anyone?

Oh well, off to English.

I'll see you later.

It's Daylight Robbery, I Tell You!

Okay, not really. I was just exaggerating - sorta.

I mean, RM38 for a magazine is definitely a better bargain compared to RM38 per month for some dead-and-dying game. *coughragnarokcough* At least I get colourful glossy pages to drool over time and again instead of gameplay that only lasts 30 days. Gosh, I feel so stupid now.

Not that it was all bad - I got to know some really great online friends during my active years there. ^^ (And the game was super cute! >_<)
So... anyway, I have completely forgotten why and what I wanted to blog about while I was searching for pictures to add to this post. *facepalms*

I quote Winnie the Pooh - "Think, think, think..."

Oh yes! Now I remember. The 5th (subbed) episode of Junjou Romantica 2 is out today! *dances around happily* Have I ever mentioned that I love Aarinfantasy to bits? Well, Junjou Romantica has become my drug addiction and they are the suppliers. It is the reason why I look forward to the next week, because I know that I will get my fill of romance (albeit of the not-so-conventional type) and humour from it.

I now officially announce that Junjou Romantica is my obsession!

Phew, that felt good. =)

Now all I need is the scanlation of the 8th volume so that I'll know what happens next in the Romantica arc. I freely admit I am only a fan of the Usagi X Misaki pairing and not really into the other 2 pairings. Nevertheless, you take what you can get, right? And all of them are gorgeous! =P

Ah, did I mention cute Japanese guys? No? Well, there was a whole bunch of them (2 and a half tables, actually) having lunch in this little 米粉糕 (mee hoon kuih) shop in Klang - which, btw, sells the most delicious 米粉糕 this side of the Peninsular - and there were several who were really good-looking. Talk about having some eye-candy before the main course! XD They were precisely what the doctor ordered to cure me of my emo-ness + slight depression the night before. ~lol~
Photobucket
Gackt the dorkiest yet coolest J-rocker ever! XD

Yeah, that's about it for today. Off to sleep!
Nightz, people. ^^ Sweet dreams~!

Book Fair Booty and W-T-F?! KFC

Woohoo~!! I finally managed to get my very own copy of...

at the 第十届国际中文书展 (International Chinese Book Fair) held at The Mines today.

I know all you Final Fantasy fans must be soooo envious right now. *strokes the glossy pages lovingly* =P Hahahaha! I know I'm perasan-ing, don't kill me plz.

Well, some of you probably already know that I normally try to stay as far away from Chinese books as possible, but somehow the words "book fair" seem to have some kind of magnetic influence on me. My dad actually asked me yesterday if I wanted to go, but since it was Sunday I was sure it was gonna be packed like 2 cans of sardines stuffed into 1, so I told my dad and he said we'd go today. And go we did - dad, mum and me.
My parents' entry ticket. I got in for free. *grins*

Though it would've been pretty neat if we'd went yesterday, coz 林宇中 was there in his official role of ambassador. I must say, he looks cute with the 'bookworm' look. ^o^So after walking around the fair, we went to the shopping mall part and walked some more. (lol) Nothing much to see, except that the top floor, which was previously vacant and walled up, had been opened up as a sort of IT floor.

Then we went to KFC for a bite to eat and to rest our tired legs. Oh.My.God. I have never felt so pissed off at a fast food joint in my entire life!First there was this bunch of women who took like hours to order and get their food. The lady who was beside us in the next line had already reached the front of the line by the time they were finished. Wtf?!
Then when it was my turn to order, that same bunch of bitches (Yes, I was really pissed off by then!) came back waving some coupons at the counter guy. I thought they wanted to get some napkins of something, but it turned out that THEY WANTED TO REDEEM THE FREE FOOD FROM THEIR COUPONS OR SOME OTHER FREAKING REASON. Like, wtf?! Get behind the line if you wanna get your food lah! And the guy at the counter was also damn blur and slow. =.= So all in all, it took us half an hour to queue up at a fast food joint.
KFC

Mathematically, this is incorrect.
But for the sake of humor and for you 8th graders:

KFC = FUCK - U
KFC is one letter away from FUCK. All it's missing is U!
- Comedy Fest 2005
You just gotta love their brilliance. Seriously.

Yes, I realize it just turned from a perasan post to a rant post. Whatever. It's my blog and I'll write whatever I want. Not like anybody cares. XD

Till next time,
Laura

Elementary, My Dear Watson

Well, I've spent the past few days reading Sherlock Holmes. Seriously, with so many other detective stories out there, the only ones which can make me read them again and again are the Sherlock Holmes cases by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Even Agatha Christie (I absolutely loved "And Then There Were None") is no match for this 19th century crime fiction author.I mean, you really have to admire his powers of "deductive reasoning" and keen observation to solve the most baffling cases. Coupled with an ironic sense of humour, an ego that sometimes borders on arrogance (yet he frequently lets Scotland Yard take the credit for his work) and a faithful sidekick - Dr Watson, Sherlock Holmes is the icon of private detectives.

Some of my favourites from the many Sherlock Holmes stories would include

  • The Hound of the Baskervilles
  • The Adventure of the Speckled Band
  • The Empty House
  • The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton
It is always fascinating to read about Holme's exploits and I never cease to be amazed at the way he solves cases in 19th century London. The first (and usual) reaction he gets when he announces that "...this investigation draws rapidly to a close" is wide-eyed surprise or skepticism, followed by enlightenment and awe after his explanations - which, by the way, always seems so simple and logical.
And here are some of my favourite quotes from the various stories about the great detective...

"You are Holmes, the meddler."
My friend smiled.
"Holmes, the busybody!"
His smile broadened.
"Holmes, the Scotland Yard Jack-in-office!"
Holmes chuckled heartily.
- from The Adventure of the Speckled Band

"I had at last met an antagonist who was my intellectual equal. My horror at his crimes was lost in my admiration of his skill."
- from The Final Problem

"I have always had an idea that I would have made a highly efficient criminal."
- from The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton

'Thank you,' said he, as he replaced the glass. 'It is the second most interesting object that I have seen in the North.'
'And the first?'
Holmes folded up his cheque, and placed it carefully in his notebook. 'I am a poor man,' said he, as he patted it affectionately, and thrust it into the depths of his inner pocket.
- from The Priory School

To be honest, the thought had crossed my mind that if he hadn't been a private detective, Holmes would have undoubtedly been a formidable criminal mastermind.Oh, on a parting note...
The phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson" does not, in fact, appear in the Conan Doyle books, only later in Sherlock Holmes' films. It was first used by P. G. Wodehouse, in Psmith Journalist, 1915.

Err... Um... Yikes?

At this rate, my blog's gonna have abandonment issues like the Xanga one.

Anyway, what's going on recently in my life would be college assignments, anime, manga, running around various bookstores, and being too lazy to blog even though I am (almost) constantly in the vincinity or in front of a computer/latop.

Phew. That was a long one.

So basically the idea was that I spent 3 consecutive days doing assignments until 4 a.m. (Yes, procrastinating dies really hard) with the result that I looked like a panda (only without the black and white fur) on Friday. Which happened to be the day I was meeting up with friends at Sunway Pyramid. Which also happened to be Halloween. Say hello to your friendly neighbourhood vampire-wannabe! XD

Then the weekend was spent going around Kinokuniya and Borders trying to get hold of the Junjou Romantica mangas. Last I saw the manga section at Kino, they still had ALL the available volumes there. Then when I went there on Saturday, they were all GONE. As in, not a single volume was left! W-T-F?! And they told me they couldn't get any more shipped over. (Thanks a bunch, Malaysian filter system. *glares daggers*) So I popped over to Borders at Times Square. Luckily they still had vol. 3 & 7, so I quickly snapped them up and asked if they had any more at their sister store. Next day I went to Borders the Curve and gobbled up vol. 4 & 5. I was told that Borders @ Gardens Midvalley had already sold out the other remaining titles. Noooooooo!!! T_T

Okay okay, I know I've got an obsession going on. It's totally under control. (READ: Who knows where I can buy the other volumes?! HELP!!)

Right, I can see you people rolling your eyes and/or edging away from the computer right about now. Fine, I'm off to have lunch, a listening test and then back home to the 3rd episode of Junjou Romantica season 2. =D

Ciaoz!!

Move Over Cedric, I've Found My Edward Cullen!

I'm telling you, casting Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen was probably the worst idea ever.

Why? Because he's freaking Cedric Diggory, that's why! And he doesn't look anything like the Edward in my imagination either. That Edward was much, much more gorgeous and inhuman than Robert could ever be, even with the help of CG. I'm sorry, but that's the truth.

The closest thing I've ever seen that resembled my beloved Edward Cullen, vampire extraordinaire, is this...

C'mon, I know you're halfway convinced now. Pretty, ain't he? *grins*

Details, details. His name is Gackt, and he's one of Japan's biggest J-Rockstars. The screencaps above were taken from his "Secret Garden" MV (2001) and it's definitely one of my absolute favourites. Other interesting details about him is that he's half Japanese and half French, has blue eyes (I'm not kidding) and is convinced that he's a vampire. LoL! Oh, and although he looks like a bi-, he's actually pretty straight (most of the time). XD

And here you have it - the Cullen siblings! [From left:] Rosalie, Jasper, Alice, Edward, Emmet

Roasted piglets... and cars?!

Gosh... I haven't blogged in days. Nothing much to blog about, except for the occasional glimpse of life's weirder sights.

Looks like the Big Bad Wolf managed to get the 3 little pigs after all... and also all their cousins. o_O
Okay, joking aside, this picture was taken at the SS2 pasar malam more than a week ago (4th August 2008). Those roasted piglets were part of the menu for the charity dinner or something that evening. And no, I was not at the dinner. I was just there for the pasar malam.

If roasted piglets are not your thing, then how about a burnt car?
This... wreck of a car was seen being towed away from Leisure Commerce Square this afternoon.

Here's the story...
[2 days ago] At around 4.00 p.m., a ringing alarm is heard coming from Block B of Leisure Commerce Square. Many people are surprised at the sound but not unduly worried, convinced that it is ringing because yet another lift has broken down. It stops after a few minutes and everybody continues about their business, with the alarm ringing in their ears. Several minutes later, the alarm starts up again, more persistent than before. A short while later, people are stunned to see all the workers and students in Block B pouring out of the building, apparently evacuating the premises. At the same time, thick smoke can be seen coming out from the basement car park. All this time, the alarm has been ringing.

[The Reveal] According to Ms. Catherine (our ECS lecturer), the incident was started by a spark from some broken wiring in the basement car park. It seems that the spark caused a pillar to catch fire, which eventually spread to the car parked next to it. As we all know, cars and fire do not mix well, resulting in quite a nasty mess. Luckily nobody was hurt in this unfortunate incident. The same cannot be said for the car, which, as you can see, had more than its rubber burnt off.

If you wanna know how good J. Co. Donuts are, look no further. This is the proof!
...Yeah, proof of how "wu liao" we are. Fact is, that box is empty. We just couldn't find a place to dispose of it and were passing it around. I was about to pass it to Ruth when it suddenly seemed like a good opportunity to take some random pics, hence the "It's-mine!-No-it's-MINE!" moment. LoL~

See? That's the last donut!

P/S: I'm starting to like Sunway Pyramid now. XD

08.08.08 Beijing Olympic

This is what you'll find when you use Google today:

Cute and also kinda cool, huh? ; )

So today's the big day - 8th August 2008 - the start of the 29th Olympiad held in Beijing, China. There's nothing much to say that hasn't been said already, therefore I'm just going to announce that my eyes will be glued to the TV from 8 p.m. onwards until the opening ceremony ends.

......Oh wait, I don't think that's quite possible. We're having an online discussion about the assignment for ECS. Dang. Looks like I'll have to switch between screens then. Thank goodness for laptops!

I think I'm deteriorating. I have all these ideas for my blog posts, but when the time comes for me to blog, I'm usually too lazy to do it or they've already escaped into the abyss of oblivion (a.k.a. I totally forgot what I wanted to write).

Taken during the meeting this afternoon. From left: Aaron, Victor, Christine, JQ and me. ^^

1st EVER College Blog Post !

Woohoo~!! Yes, it's my first ever blog post typed and published on a TCPJ computer. You can go ahead and go all "L-A-M-E~!" over my enthusiasm and roll your eyes or whatever, I don't care! =P

Well, had a class at 8 a.m. (Intro to Mass Comm.) with Mr. Benjamin. We didn't know which group we would be in yet, so we just showed up for the morning class, just in case. Had 5 whole hours ("OMG 5?!) of free time till the next class, since the lecturer for Intro to Human Communication was still on her vacation.

I couldn't log into the Taylor's computer (not to mention website), so after lunch, Foong Yee (Thank you! ^^) accompanied me to the ICT Department to fix it. Finally! =) So now I'm surfing the net while waiting for 3pm, when the lecture starts.

Cheerios!

Malaysian Petroleum Club (MPC) - Chinese Restaurant

For latest updates on the MPC, visit my new blog: Winter Blossoms

As promised, another MPC update! ^^

This time around, Dad took us to have lunch at the MPC's Chinese restaurant - Seligi. (Yes, I know it doesn't sound Chinese at all, but whatever.) So, the thing is, I couldn't go inside there before this year... because I wasn't of age yet. Yup, they have an age restriction for all except the coffeehouse (which was the place that I blogged about before). This year I'm 18, thus I can legitimately go and dine in Seligi. *wide grin*So, in typical Chinese fashion, we were seated at a round table (Chinese always have to have round tables, huh?) and then my parents were given the menu to order dishes. I took a peek and it was really quite simple; several ways of cooking chicken, fish, vegetables, tofu and a few others I can't remember. Thoughtful as ever, they even had 2 set meals for vegetarians. Oh, and of course, the usual desserts.

With some helpful comments and suggestions from the
maître d', we (okay, my dad) ordered Cod Steamed in Soy Sauce, Claypot Tofu with Seafood, Prawns Cooked with Oatmeal and Stir-fried Baby Bak Choi. We also added a dessert of the Red Bean Pastry that you always get at Chinese weddings. (They didn't have lotus paste! *disappointed*)
Anyway, the first dish to arrive was the prawns. I gotta tell ya, those were absolutely some of the biggest prawns I've ever seen in my entire life! I mean, it came all covered with oatmeal, so at first I thought, "Wow, those prawns are pretty big, even with the shells still on them," and then when I took a closer look, I just couldn't believe it! The prawns were already de-shelled and ready to eat, and they were HUGE! They were all curled up and almost as big as my fist! My goodness...

Next came the baby bak choi and claypot tofu. I'll admit, the first thought that went through my head when I saw the vegetables was "Ohmigosh! Those baby bak choi really are so small, they look so cute and yummy!" LoL~ The claypot tofu looked pretty normal in comparison.

The
"star of the show" finally arrived not long after - the Cod Steamed in Soy Sauce. It looked really, really delicious, with the 2 big pieces of beautifully cut snow-white cod lying in a pool of amber soy sauce and some garnishings on top.The first dish I tried was the oatmeal prawns. Despite their size, the skillful chef managed to get the prawns' texture just right, not too tough and not too soft. The sweetness and aroma of the oatmeal complimented the slight saltiness of the prawns perfectly. Next was the baby bak choi, which was stir-fried with just the right amount of oil, retaining its crunchiness and fresh green colour. The tofu was also not bad, with generous amounts of seafood accompanying the tofu and mushrooms.

Undoubtedly, the best dish was the cod fish. A first bite gives the impression that the fish meat is melting in your mouth, and gone before you even realise it. The second bite lets you savour the experience, and such is the skill of the chef in steaming it that all the flavours of the fish are still very much intact. The meat is very smooth and the skin (normally quite different from the meat and instantly recognisable from its texture) is barely distinguished when put into the mouth. Of course, without the soy sauce, it would not be perfect. But try pouring a generous helping of sauce onto your steamed rice, and then eating it together with the cod fish - now that is what I call a divine mouthful. After that wonderful lunch, we sat for a while drinking tea and watching the scenery outside the 43rd floor window. I was sitting facing the windows, so the building directly in front of me caught my attention. It was [apparently] quite "transparent", with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, *gasp* walls and doors! Seriously. I could even see a worker walking from room to room inside. It was rather... fascinating, to say the least. Or maybe a little freaky. I mean, it looked more like apartment lots than offices, but who would like a transparent house, even if it is 40+ storeys high? People in working in the Petronas Twin Towers (for example) would be able to see everything. O_oOh well, that's about it. Next time, I wanna go to Kiku Japanese restaurant, which is just down the hallway next to Seligi. XD

Me messing around with the teapot before leaving. Where am I looking?!

Orientation @ TCPJ

Yup, my college life @ Taylor's College Petaling Jaya (TCPJ) has officially started!

So basically this week is Orientation Week, since it's all about getting us "newbies" familiarised with the school's system and campus and other miscellaneous stuff. Today was pretty boring - some talks on the library's usage and some note-taking tips.

Monday, 28th July 2008 -
Needless to say, it didn't seem to start out very smoothly when I walked into The Annexe (fancy name for "Hall-in-the-Basement") and went over report my attendance, only to discover that my name wasn't on the list for Foundation in Communication. In my head I was like "Wtf? I registered 4 freakin' months ago and paid my fees last week! Why the hell is my name NOT on the list?!" Then I showed them my receipt and they were like "Oh... In that case, write your name on the list then."

Great. Just great. -_-"

Thankfully, after that not-so-minor glitch, everything went on without incident for the rest of the day. After listening to a couple of hours of briefing/talks/speeches, we were separated into our respective "schools" (mine is School of Communication, SOC for short) and relocated to a smaller lecture hall, where we listened to some more briefings. After that, a senior brought us around for a tour of the campus. Then we were released for lunch and ID photo-taking session.

Luckily, me and Jennifer (her real name is quite similar to mine *grins*) went to The Annexe early to queue up for the photo session. Waited nearly 30 minutes before our turn, and then we went to have lunch with Charmaine (not sure if I spelled her name correctly, sorry~) before going back to the small lecture hall.

Now began our "ice breaking" session of the day. Each of us were given slips of paper with song lyrics on them. We were supposed to find people who had lyrics from the same song and form a group. I got a line from Madonna's "Don't Cry For Me Argentina". LoL!

We got together with the other group who got Madonna's song "American Pie" and sat in double rows. The first game we played was Charades. The theme was "Titles of Famous Movies" and all the other groups managed to guess both their movie titles except our group. (I bet all of us will forever remember "Toy Story" now! Haha!) However, we were not discouraged by this. In the second game, a group member was chosen to be "creatively mummified". All of us agreed that Michelle was the most suitable member to be mummified. XD And so she went from this...

...to this!

Thanks for being such a good sport! ^^
(Credits to Michelle herself for the photos - I stole the links from her blog *guilty*)

And in the end, our group even managed to get 1st runner-up in the "Mummy Competition"! Yay~!! Our prize was a packet of Van Houten chocolates. Yummy~ =)

Group pics! And yes, that's the one and only guy in our group. XD
